Riots and protesting continued throughout the night and lasted for several days, becoming what we now know as the Stonewall Uprising, and serving as the catalyst for the modern gay rights movement. On the night of June 28, black gay men, lesbians, drag queens and trans women lead the fight against the brutality towards the gay community.
Police regularly raided gay bars, often harassing and arresting patrons based on their sexuality. It began in June of 1969 at the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar in NYC’s Greenwich Village.
